Lesson Lesson 8: -AR, -ER, -IR SPANISH IRREGULAR VERBS ( December 1-17, 2007 )

This lesson teaches students the conjugation of five irregular Spanish verbs. These verbs are: ser, estar, tener, hacer, and ir. The goal is to help students to understand and learn why they are important in the Spanish language.

The concept of verb conjugation among irregular verbs is the same as in English. Verb conjugation refers to the process of changing a verb form to provide information about the action being performed. The form of the verb can gives us some idea about who is performing the action, when the action is being performed, and the relation of the verb to other parts of the sentence. In Spanish you have to keep always in mind the relationship between stem (root) and the ending of the verb. Lets consider the five irregular verbs mentioned above.

Example: SER -------------------- S (the root or stem) and –ER (the ending).

Irregular verb conjugations have to be memorized. With practice it will feel natural.

Lesson Lesson 9: Christmas in the Spanish Speaking World ( December 19, 2007 )

This lesson teaches students the how Christmas is celebrated in some parts of the Spanish speaking world. The goal is to help students understand Christmas from the Hispanic perspective.

Christmas is a Christian celebration brought to Spanish America by the Roman Catholic Church through Spanish colonists during the Age of Discovery. For Hispanics Christmas is about advent, Jesus Christ is the central figure throughout the celebration. Although in United States advent is the same as throughout the Christian world. The cultural differences between Spanish America and Anglo-America are striking especially when it comes to food. Traditionally in the Spanish speaking world people exchange presents on January 6th and not December 25th.

            Christmas Vocabulary:

Lesson Lesson 10: Review Lessons 6-9   ( January 4-, 2008 )

Lesson 10 is a review on lessons 6-9. The purpose is to help students review the information introduced in class during the 1st and 2nd quarter.
Lesson #9, students learned that the preterite is used for past actions that are seen as completed. They learned how to conjugate regular –ar verbs. In this lesson, students  will learn how to conjugate -er and -ir verbs, and become more familiar with the uses of the preterite.

To conjugate regular -ar verbs in the preterite, simply drop the ending (-ar) and add one of the following:

é
aste
ó
amos
asteis
aron

To conjugate regular -er and -ir verbs in the preterite, simply drop the ending (-er or -ir) and add one of the following:

í
iste

imos
isteis
ieron

Here are all three regular preterite verb forms together:

hablar

comer

vivir

hablé

comí

viví

hablaste

comiste

viviste

habló

comió

vivió

hablamos

comimos

vivimos

hablasteis

comisteis

vivisteis

hablaron

comieron

vivieron

Note: the nosotros forms for -ar and -ir verbs are the same in both preterite and present tenses: hablamos, vivimos.

The preterite is used for actions that can be viewed as single events.

Ella caminó por el parque.
She walked through the park.

Ellos llegaron a las ocho.
They arrived at
eight o'clock .

The preterite is used for actions that were repeated a specific number of times, or occurred during a specific period of time.

Ayer escribí tres cartas.
Yesterday I wrote three letters.

Vivimos allí por cuatro años.
We lived there for four years.

The preterite is used for actions that were part of a chain of events.

Ella se levantó, se vistió, y salió de la casa.
She got up, dressed, and left the house.

The preterite is used to state the beginning or the end of an action.

Empezó a nevar a las ocho de la mañana.
It began to snow at eight in the morning.

The above examples all fall within our general rule for using the preterite:

The preterite is used for past actions that are seen as completed.

Irregular Preterite Forms

Unfortunately, there are a fair number of irregular forms in the Preterite.  Irregular forms in the Preterite are said to have "radical" changes, that is, consonant changes, not just changes in vowels like stem-changing verbs.  These irregular preterite consonant changes also are NOT for orthographic (spelling) reasons (like the verbs ending in -Car, -Gar and -Zar.).

Some common Irregular verbs with radical changes in the Preterite are:

Yo

él, ella, usted

nosotros

ellos, ellas, ustedes

anduvimos

anduvieron
